The right-back for France, Jonathan Clauss, has explained why he chose Marseille over Chelsea this summer.
Clauss claimed that the chance to play Champions League football was the reason he selected Marseille.
The 29-year-old claimed that Marseille “ticked all the boxes.”
Recall that Clauss, who had impressed during his two years with Lens, had piqued Chelsea’s interest.
The highly regarded full-back, however, ignored the Blues’ desire to keep him in France and instead signed a three-year, €7.5 million contract with Marseille.
Clauss stated to Info Sport, “I didn’t want to sign for Chelsea to one day say I signed for Chelsea” (via Evening Standard).
“The main goal was to attempt to continue playing and learn about the Champions League. I found everything I was looking for in Marseille.”
Clauss to join Ligue 1 team in 2020 and contributed to eight goals and 19 others.
