- Man Utd loses their club record to PSG as Messi surpasses Ronaldo to create a new mark.
Following his summer transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, striker Lionel Messi has surpassed Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo to set a new record.
Ronaldo and Manchester United no longer hold the record for player shirt sales thanks to Messi’s high-profile summer transfer from Barcelona to PSG a year ago.
Last season, PSG sold over one million shirts for the first time, with “Messi 30” contributing more than 60% of that total, a record for any football player.
According to the Mirror UK on Friday, this means that Messi’s shirt sales have surpassed those of Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Manchester United from Juventus last summer. As a result, the Red Devils are no longer the team with the highest shirt sales.
According to the source, shirt sales alone brought in roughly €1 million in the hours after it was revealed that Messi had signed with the French Ligue 1 winners and would don the number 30 jersey.
With the arrival of the Argentine, PSG also relocated its official store to the Champs-Elysees, doubling its floor space and boosting its income from lifestyle goods, with the Jordan Brand also contributing to sales growth.
Nasser Al Khelaifi, the president of PSG, had earlier this week claimed that the signing of Messi had actually brought in money for the team.
“If we sign, it’s because we can,” Khelaifi remarked. Take Messi as an example. It was the same; they claimed it was unaffordable financially.
