Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has warned the Senate against confirming Lauretta Onochie, President Muhammadu Buhari’s aide, as a National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The Rights group asked the Senate not to confirm Onochie, describing her as a person widely known to be deeply divisive and a strong member of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.

Onochie is also seen by the group as one of the die-hard partisan loyalists of the Buhari government.

HURIWA warned that any attempt to confirm the Delta-born presidential aide as INEC commissioner would be the death nail to the coffin of the independence and impartiality of INEC.

The group said the confirmation of Onochie would unambiguously become the everlasting evidence that the National Assembly has become a rubber-stamped institution and open to corruption and compromises.

“We believe that Onochie, who openly confessed her membership to the All Progressives Congress and has posted a lot of statements on the popular social media platforms to demonstrate her aversion for multiparty democracy but prefers a one-party state, is not a fit and proper person to be so appointed into INEC.

“Her enlistment into INEC means that the 2023 election has been rigged already in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress. Her going to INEC means the official obituary and death of INEC”.

HURIWA asked the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and other lawmakers to maintain the already established precedent by rejecting Onochie’s nomination.

The National Association of Nigerian Students, Southwest Zone (NANS Zone D) has told the management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) to reinstate the Students Union Governments (SUG) in the two institutions within 14 days.

NANS threatened to embark on a protest that would halt activities in the two schools if nothing is done.

This was contained in a statement made available to DAILY POST in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Wednesday by the Deputy Coordinator of NANS, Southwest Zone, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman.

Uthman, in the statement, threatened that “armless battalions of the student’s populace will storm the two institutions if nothing is done to ensure the reinstatement of the student’s body in the institutions within the 14 days.”

According to him, the SUG remains the only recognized and legitimate representative of the students, adding that its importance cannot be overemphasized.

Suspension of SUG Excos: NANS gives UNIBEN 72-hour ultimatum

“It is on this note that the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students Southwest Zone (NANS Zone D), demands an unconditional restoration of the Students’ Union Government in the University of Lagos, Akoka, and Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos State,” he said.

NANS lamented that the SUG has been suspended in the two institutions for about five years, alleging outright disregard for the freedom of association and abuse of fundamental human rights.

“NANS Southwest Zone hereby levels a charge of outright disregard for the freedom of association and abuse of fundamental human rights to demand welfarism and justice against both institutions as it is entrenched in the Nigeria constitution.

“The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students Southwest Zone under the stewardship of Comrade Kappo Olawale hereby gives the management of the institutions concerned a definite move towards restoring the Student’s Union Government through the announcement of a total lift of ban on students unionism and a corresponding announcement of the Students Union Government election date within the next 14days or be prepared to receive the secretariat of NANS Zone D and our armless battalions as we shall resort to bringing a massive demonstration that will halt all activities in the institution,” the statement reads.

Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams has sent a letter to the global community, seeking their intervention in the ongoing killings and kidnappings in Nigeria.

The letter titled, ‘Urgent Need To Stop K*llings By Fulani Herdsmen In Yorubaland’, was addressed to Secretary-General, United Nations; Chairperson of the African Union; Secretary of State, the United States; British Foreign Secretary; European Union Member States, the Economic Community of West African States, amongst others on Wednesday.

    The letter partly read,

“So, it is because of the psychopathic killings going on in our land that I’m writing this letter to you to please intervene in this murderous quagmire.

“We have a situation in which the Federal Government appears overwhelmed and is fast losing grip of its constitutional mandate to protect the land.

“Obviously, Nigeria is on the precipice, cascading downward in a dangerous and suicidal manner.

“Words of wisdom seem to have taken flight.

“Because we live in a global world, I am drawing your attention that any crisis that happens in Nigeria may have a negative effect on the rest of the world.

“And it may happen soon because all the security establishments are already showing signs of virtual ineffectiveness.”
