An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday sentenced a student of Lagos State University (LASU), Afeez Ogunbowale, to 21 years imprisonment for involvement in armed robbery and r*pe of two fellow LASU students.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo sentenced Ogunbowale after finding him guilty of five counts bordering on conspiracy, rape and armed robbery.

Taiwo said that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

She held that the testimony of the victims was compelling, adding that they were able to positively identify Ogunbowale as one of the culprits.

“The defendant is hereby sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy, 21 years’ imprisonment each for counts of armed robbery and 21 years’ imprisonment each for counts of rape.

“The sentences are to run concurrently,” she said.

On hearing the sentence, Ogunbowale who has been suspended by LASU over the case wept profusely at the dock.

NAN reports that the prosecution team led by Mrs O.A Bajulaiye-Bishi had said that the defendant committed the offences alongside others who are at large, on April 18, 2018, at the Okokomaiko area of Lagos.

“The defendant and his accomplices, while armed with a gun, knife, machete and bottle, robbed the two students in their off-campus accommodation.

“They were robbed of their phones, power bank, earpiece, gold chain and N1, 200.

“The defendant and one of his accomplices who is still at large had unlawful sexual intercourse with the complainants.

“The offences contravene Sections 260(1) and 297(2)(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” she said.

NAN reports that in their testimonies on Nov. 4, 2019, the two students, told the court that they lost their virginities to the attack.

The witnesses said they were robbed by five men, but raped by two members of the gang – Ogunbowale and another – who is at large.

They said that they were able to identify Ogunbowale through Facebook, adding that they belonged to the same faculty.

The complainants testified that when they confronted the convict at a police station, he prostrated and begged for forgiveness.

In his defence on Sept. 30, 2020, the convict denied involvement in the crime and gave an alibi to the court.

Led in evidence by defence counsel, Mr Bisi Salau, he said that on the night the offences were committed, he was in the school premises preparing for an examination which was to begin in May 2018.

  1. Provide evidence, ex- Eagles coach replies minister

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has accused former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia of being economical with the truth in the wake of his life ban by FIFA, The PUNCH reports.

World football body FIFA’s life ban Siasia in 2019 for allegedly agreeing to “receive bribes in relation to the manipulation of matches” was on June 28 reduced to five years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with the court also canceling a fine of $50,000 imposed on him.

Siasia, in a press conference in Abuja, on Friday disclosed that he met Dare after the ban, but alleged that “all the minister could say was that there was no money.”

But Dare said the 53-year-old coach was given cash, adding that details of the transactions would be made public soon.

“Siasia is not telling the truth and the ministry and the government will come out with the facts of the cash he collected and the efforts we made. He is not telling the truth,” Dare said in an audio made available to The PUNCH.

Also, a statement from Dare’s media office on Tuesday said, “The minister stayed on top of the case by pulling all strings to assist Siasia. In addition to the governors of Edo, Delta, and Lagos, he made an appeal to the Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, the Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi. In another instance, the minister took Siasia on a visit to the then Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson to appeal for support for him.

“Siasia’s claim that government did nothing to assist him is untrue, deceitful, and misleading. While there are no budgetary provisions for such incidents, the ministry and the Office of the Minister gave Siasia all the support that led to the mitigation of his life ban from football-related activities.”

Siasia said, “If he (Dare) has any proof of how they (the government) helped me, they should bring it out, I’m not running away. It’s not a problem. I said the government didn’t help me. I met with him (Dare), he’s a nice guy and he was trying to help but he could not. What did I say that was bad there?

Why I Celebrated Nnamdi Kanu’s Rearrest – Joe Igbokwe Reveals
    ByClimaxtrend
    JUN 30, 2021
Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has revealed why he celebrated the rearrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
CLIMAXTREND had reported that shortly after Kanu’s arrest, Joe Igbokwe, who is an aide to the Governor of Lagos State, shared a photo of himself kneeling and raising his hands in thanksgiving over the arrest of Kanu.
However, in a post he shared later, Igbokwe gave reasons for celebrating the arrest of the leader of the secessionist group.
According to him, Nnamdi Kanu asked his boys to behead him anywhere they see him.
“Nnamdi asked his boys to behead me anywhere they see me. They did not spare my Children as they extended the same fatwa to them.
“He also did not spare the names of every other person who speaks against him dream land, Biafra. While they were looking for me I sort the face of God hours on end because I know that to kneel is to win. It was a big battle.
“Friends were calling me , family members shouted from the roof top that I should lie low. My Children said I was putting them in constant danger.
“My family lived in fear. When they could not get me they resorted to calling my phones to pour invectives.
“They threatened my Children at the drop of a hat. On my Facebook page the Children of Hate Nnamdi Kanu trained and nurtured for years in abuse and hate, bigotry, primordial sentiments, ethnic preoccupation will come in their thousands to rain abuses with all kinds of unprintable words.
“They cannot even read what you wrote to understand the trajectory . I endured it all. When they noticed that I am not bothered they resorted to propaganda and heckling,”
    He wrote.
