Italy legend, Fabio Cannavaro, has told Roberto Mancini’s side how they can stop Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, when both teams clash in the 2022 World Cup play-off fixture.
Mancini’s Italy have been drawn with Portugal, Turkey and North Macedonia and in their 2022 World Cup play-off group.
They will face North Macedonia in the semi-final and could potentially meet Portugal or Turkey in the final.
But Cannavaro, a former Ballon d’Or winner, wants Italy to feature Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci in the defence in a bid to stop Ronaldo, who he claimed is not as agile as before.
“Italy have nothing to fear as we play as we know,” Cannavaro told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Portugal are strong, but you need to beat anxiety in these games. [Cristiano] Ronaldo would want to qualify for the World Cup, it is the game he will live for.
“He keeps scoring goals, but Chiellini and Bonucci know his movements well and Cristiano isn’t as agile as he used to be some years ago and we could benefit from it.”
Recall that Chiellini and Bonucci were former teammates with Ronaldo at Juventus before the Portugal forward left the Serie A giants for Man United in the summer.
Ronaldo, 36, played three seasons with Chiellini and Bonucci at Juventus, winning two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia and two Italian SuperCups.
The former Real Madrid star scored 101 goals in 134 appearances for the Old Lady.
